HUMACAO

I am so sorry that it has been a little bit since I have been able to email a group email but I am in Humacao now and it is one of the most amazing areas. I love it here so much. My companion is Hermana Allred from Las Vegas, Nevada and from Saratoga Springs, Utah!! We lived 20 minutes away from each other in Utah but did not meet until we came to Puerto Rico:) She is a spiritual giant and is helping me grow so much. We are seeing some amazing miracles from being obedient to our mission rules and the advice of our mission president. As a mission we are asked to talk to 10 new people every day for every missionary. That is 20 new contacts every day and we have been able to complete with that promise everyday for these past 2 weeks and now we are seeing some wonderful blessings.

We are  teaching Jaileen who is getting baptized on the 7th of December. We were able to go to a members house and have lunch with the Youngs :)  We have some pictures from that really fun lunch. We  are also teaching a man named Tony :) He is amazing at painting and drawing and he drew a picture of the Puerto Rican Temple as his way of keeping his eye on the temple :)

I love you all so much :)  We had a wonderful Mission Leadership Conference yesterday with Brother Corbitt from the missionary Department of the Church and he talked a lot about the faith that we had in the premortal existence and how we really just to be reminded of the faith that we already had. We are of infinite worth and value and are able to go through hard things. As a companionship we are working on increasing our faith to find the Elect of God who are the ones who will listen to us and not harden their hearts :)

Also my companion had the talk on Sunday in church. .... And when we looked down in her bag after the sacrament we realized that she did not have her talk... SOOO while the other speaker was giving her talk we RAN ALL THE WAY TO OUR HOUSE to grab the talk and ran back before the 1st speaker finished her talk! It was the most stressful sacrament meeting but she got her talk and no one noticed that we were gone for 10 minutes :) So we are good. Its fine, I'm fine, its fine. :)

GO FIGHT WIN!
Remember to tuck your tail.

Have a wonderful week friends and family!IMG-3123.jpg

Jeffrey :) Transfers

This week we had a baptism for Jeffrey. I have been teaching Jeffrey for the past 6 months and he has become one of my best friends out here. We have celebrated birthdays, cried together ( me more than him) , and have grown for our love of God together. It has been one of the biggest blessings in my life to teach and struggle with Jeffrey and then see him grown in his trust and Faith in God. He was baptized this last Saturday and received the gift of the Holy Ghost  yesterday.  I learned a lot about how the Lord really is taking care of his children here on earth. I know that our Heavenly Father Loves us and is incredibly patient with our faults and weaknesses. Heavenly Father really does answer prayers and when Jeffrey received his answer if really did confirm to me that our Father loves us. We come from loving Heavenly Parents and they want us to come home to them.

The hard part about the Baptism of Jeffrey is that I will be leaving Toa Baja and him behind. I have fulfilled my purpose for the people in Toa baja and I will be moving on to Humacao back into the zone of Caguas which is on the southeastern side of the island. I am so grateful for the time I had with Hermana Carrasco and her hard work and everything that she has taught me with our time together. I will miss some of the most amazing members here. Hermano Toro, Joanna, Hermana Nerida, Gina Lopez, Los Bushers :) SO many amazing members here in Toa Baja :)

We also had a really wonderful district activity where we went to a cool lookout with one amazing district. But also we have a shout out to part of our old MTC district :) #8A

BAPTISM!

Hello Family and Friends :)

This week was such a wonderful week. This week we were able to have the baptism of Julio (or Tortuga- his Puerto Rican name) It has been such a humbling experience teaching Julio this past month. Some of my favorite memories with his is when he bought us water at 8:30 at night with the little money that he had earned for that day selling avocados. He insisted on buying us just a little bit of water and continued to share how important we were to him. That we had taken the time to teach him about Christ and all he could do to say thank you was buy us a little bit of water. I wanted to cry when he pulled out the 3 dollars he had to buy us water. Julio has such a sweet spirit about him and he has some wonderful friends in the church now. I am so grateful to be serving in Toa Baja still and I love this ward so much.

This week we got to do some wonderful service opportunities and I might have gone to the baptism with paint in my hair but the spirit was still there. Puerto Rico is still SUPER hot all the time and I am still not tanning :) BUT ITS OKAY!

I know the Lord loves his children and if he wants me to be a pale, burnt redhead in Puerto Rico then he has his purpose for why I am here. It is such a blessing to be serving in this weird little island learning some really weird Spanish but I honestly love it here.

GENCON #2019

Hello dear friends and family :)  I hope you all are doing well and had a wonderful conference weekend full of answers to prayers. We watched conference in the stake center and there is a picture of our English room set up with almost all of our zone :)

I wanted to write a little bit about how Heavenly Father will always strengthen us during difficult times. One theme that I heard a lot about was finding Joy through temple covenants. Finding joy in the small things and especially finding joy in living the gospel is an important thing to learn. I know that when we are struggling or when others are struggling we can call upon the powers of Heaven to help those in need and help ourselves. He will give us strength to say what we need to say but we still have our personal agency in order to be the mouth piece of God. I am so grateful that we have living prophets on the earth today and that we are in the true church of Jesus Christ.

So sorry this is such a short email but I love you all and hope you have a wonderful week :) I would love to hear about your conference experiences :)

Questions of the week
What are your "General Conference" snacks?
What was your favorite talk?
What are you going to do differently in the next 6 months before the next conference? (remember the invitations from President Nelson)

Wow.. What a week....

Well I had my birthday this last week and that was eventful....

To start off my birthday we woke up in the middle of the night to a pretty good sized earthquake and a notice for a tropical storm that was going to hit Puerto Rico. We ended up not being able to enter our area due to the storm so we worked in the area that we live in. Through a weird series of events we ended up going to a members house to have lunch with the elders in the area and while they were singing happy birthday  lightning hit the nearby telephone pole and caused a black out for the day also... But I made it through the day and I am now officially 20 years old :)

But the next day was the best day because one of our investigators and 3 of our recent converts surprised me with a birthday cake and a box of chocolates :)  Talito, Miyito, Miguel and Tortuga

I would love to talk about opposition. In 2 Nephi it talks about opposition in all things and I think I would not have loved that birthday cake as much as I did if not for the earthquake, storm, and lighting strike the day before. I know that we have lows we are able to experience the highs. I am really grateful for the blessing that the Lord has given me but I cant be grateful for the blessings without also being grateful for the hardships. :)

We have seen some amazing blessings in our areas and we have seen some amazing progress in Tortuga who has been giving up some really hard addictions recently through the help of the Lord.

The members here are amazing and I love being in Toa Baja. I will also be staying here in Toa Baja as a Sister Training Leader with Hermana Carrasco for this next transfer and I know this is where I need to be and the Lord knows what he is doing :)

I LOVE YOU ALL AND I LOVE HEARING FROM YOU ALL :)
Our first day as STL means FRAPPES!!!

Tropical Storm Karen dumps heavy rain over Puerto Rico following 6.0 earthquake

Tropical Storm Karen drenched the U.S. Virgin Islands on Tuesday as it bore down on an earthquake-shaken Puerto Rico still scarred by a hurricane two years ago. Heavy squalls were expected to hit some areas of the U.S. territories overnight as the storm moved slowly over the region and headed to open waters.

Forecasters said the heaviest rains would affect Puerto Rico's southern and eastern region from 8 p.m. Tuesday to about 2 a.m. Wednesday.

"The worst is yet to come," said Elmer Román, secretary of the island's Department of Public Safety.

U.S. Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan Jr. said the storm had already caused mudslides in the territory and major power outages were reported early Tuesday, though he said the cause was not yet clear.

"Don't take the storm lightly," Bryan said. "It will start to throw massive rain."

Schools and government offices were already ordered closed in Puerto Rico as well as in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, with officials warning people to stay indoors.

As the storm approached, Puerto Ricans were shaken from their beds late Monday by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake that hit in the Atlantic near the island at a shallow depth of 6 miles. Three aftershocks, of magnitude 4.7 and 4.6, followed within less than an hour. Experts say the aftershocks could continue for a week — some may not be felt.

No significant damage was reported, said Carlos Acevedo, director of Puerto Rico's emergency management agency, adding that the concern now was how much rain Karen would drop on the region. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said it could bring 2 to 4 inches.

Heavy rains were already pelting the southeast coastal town of Yabucoa, where 69-year-old retiree Víctor Ortiz huddled inside his home with his wife.

"Every year the storms are stronger and more frequent," he said, adding that he worried about landslides because he lives in a mountainous region.

The National Guard, which was activated by Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vázquez on Monday, carried out a last-minute evacuation of a weeks-old baby from the neighboring island of Vieques, which has been without a hospital since Hurricane Maria hit in 2017. Lieutenant Colonel Paul Dahlen said in a phone interview that the baby was sick and would be taken to a hospital before the storm hits.

Karen regained tropical storm strength Tuesday morning after slipping to a tropical depression. Its maximum sustained winds increased in the afternoon to 45 mph, with additional strengthening expected in upcoming days. The storm was centered about 65 miles south of San Juan and was moving north at 8 mph. Forecasters said it was expected to hit Puerto Rico's southeast region by late afternoon.

It was expected to keep heading north after passing over Puerto Rico and stay well east of the Bahamas, the Hurricane Center said. A tropical storm warning remained in effect for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and forecasters said certain areas could experience stronger winds.

Roberto Garcia, meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service's San Juan office, said that some towns in the eastern part of Puerto Rico would likely be hit with moderate to serious flooding, especially those next to mountains.

Governor Vázquez urged people in flood-prone areas to seek shelter, with more than 30 people reported in shelters by Tuesday morning.

The island is still recovering from Hurricane Maria, which hit as a Category 4 storm two years ago and is estimated to have caused more than $100 billion in damage. More than 25,000 homes still have blue tarps for roofs and the electric grid remains unstable.

"It's a reality that we might have power outages," Vázquez said.

8 Months and 20 years :)

8 months down in mission life and 20 years down in real life (almost, tomorrow) But It is crazy how fast time flies and I am really grateful for all the blessings that I have seen here in my life.

I don't have a lot to write but I have some pictures :) I love the people here in Puerto Rico. The lord is working miracles. I will write a better email next week but I looooove you all :)

Jeffrey has a baptismal date and is doing great things to move forward in his testimony :) He made us breakfast and gave us a birthday cake for our birthdays :) I love Jeffrey so much!

Talito, Miguel, Tortuga, and Miyito also got us a birthday cake for our bithdays :) )

Tender Mercies

1 Nephi 8:8 And after I had traveled for the space of many hours in darkness, I began to pray unto the Lord that he would have amercy on me, according to the multitude of his tender mercies.

I just wanted to share a quick testimony of the Tender Mercies of the Lord :) Heavenly Father is always out there waiting to give us everything we need and sometimes all we need is something funny to happen that helps us remember that he loves us.

We are teaching some really cool people and we had 3 people come to church this week, Julio (Tortuga), Jeffrey, and Ramon. We also met some incredible people yesterday with a lot of amazing stories with how they came in contact with us. I know that Heavenly Father is preparing children to learn about his gospel and it is really hard to find them sometimes but I know that they are out there.

I don't have a ton to write but I really love the members here in Toa Baja :) Shout out to the Toro family that celebrated 40 years of marriage this week :)

Emergency Preparedness

This week the big talk of the Island was the Tourmenta that was going to pass over the island. A tropical storm that could have taken out the lights of Puerto Rico and the water. As a mission rule we have to always be prepared to be without power and water for at least 4 days. When we went to the store to buy our normal groceries on Monday the store had nearly run out of bottled water and there was a line of 50 people waiting to get water so they could be prepared. The day before the storm was supposed to hit the gas stations had lines that were 4 blocks long. There were limits on how much water or gasoline people could buy. The stores were low on canned food as people rushed to the store to buy what they needed. I learned something in all of this, I was really grateful that when we went to the store we were already prepared for 4 days of gasoline, water to drink, water to bathe, and we had all the food storage that we needed in our mission apartment. There was an amazing sense of security because I was already prepared.

Now relating this spiritually. In the parable of the 10 Virgins only those who were prepared for the Bridegroom with oil in their lamps were able to enter. If we are not spiritually ready, with temple recommend in hand, when the Lord comes or when a trial hits we are going to be spiritually running to the gas station or store to frantically get what we need but will not have sufficient time to obtain it. Now is the time to be prepared with a testimony. If you have questions, GREAT!!! QUESTIONS ARE HOW THE RESTORATION STARTED. But now you need to look for answers.

(Also please be temporally prepared with food storage and emergency kits. :)  )
AND the Tropical Storm didn't even come to the island so ... we were prepared and stuck in our house all of Wednesday and it drizzled a little bit :)

We are teaching the Cousin of Miyito and he gave us Avacados :) Tortuga (Turtle) is a very humble man and he came to church this week and told us that he has never felt such peace in his life before. I am really excited to see how he progresses and changes in the Gospel :)

Why Hard things

My companion is from Peru and she is such an amazing person. Sometimes we have questioned together as to why we have certain challenges and I remember a story of Elder Neal A. Maxwell and how he struggled with Leukemia for 8 years and when he struggled with something so hard and was in the depths of despair asking "why" the Spirit whispered, "I have given you Leukemia that you might teach my people with authenticity." I know that the people here in Puerto Rico have gone through hard things and it is just one more reason to have member presences in lessons because they know how to teach with Authority. When Shawn, Recent convert 20 years old, was struggling with job, school, and church the member we brought with us shared a story of how Heavenly Father helped her get through so much more than just those three things. It really hit me.  It does not matter how hard it gets or where we have been the important thing is that we are were we are now because of it and we have to decide how we are going to use our past experiences.

With Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico in 2017 the missionary work came to a complete stop. The island was shut down. The Hurricane was really hard for the people here in the island. But, one year later President Russel M. Nelson came to the island. A few months later, the temple was announced. Hard things are used to prepare us for greater things. Like a temple. They test our commitment to our covenants and our Heavenly Father when times are hard.

Puerto Rico is doing well and the mission work is still moving forward. I love my Heavenly Father and I love my companion. I don't have much to write about because I was sick for half this week. I LOVE YOU ALL :)

TRANSFERS!

My time with Hermana Paredes has ended. We had a lot of amazing memories together :) We were able to bring Shawn, Miguel, Miyito, and Rafael into the waters of Baptism. We got in a car crash together and totaled a car, we hit some mile stones together and now a new chapter must begin here in Toa Baja. I will miss her :) It was very beautiful to see how much the Recent converts loved her and were so grateful for her hard work in bringing the gospel into their lives. She is a wonderful missionary.

BUT NOW I HAVE HERMANA CARRASCO!!!! She is also from Peru and we will be serving in Toa Baja Still :) We are going to see some amazing miracles and I am so excited. We are seeing some great progress with one of our amigos named Jeffrey. He is learning very quickly and I am so proud of the progress that he has achieved in his testimony. We had stake conference this week and that was a very spiritually uplifting weekend.

I wanted to write a little bit about how much Heavenly Father really knows our trials and our joys. This week was  a little rough but we saw many tender mercies in the work. When we needed a cloud there was always a cloud. And I really love the word for cloud in Spanish. Heavenly Father loves us and wants us to do our best and knows us so well.

It was raining pretty hard for transfers but Hermana Bates and Hermana Nelson were at the transfer sight and it was so awesome to see them!!! I have four of my companions in this photo and Hermana Plum. Who knows maybe Ill serve with her someday too.

Rafael is doing well and we are now teaching him how to smile more :) He has really changed so much and still loving his "new life" I am so proud of him.

Rafael was Baptized :)

This week was such a wonderful week. We saw a lot of miracles and a lot of opposition. A lot of opposition to the Book of Mormon especially. That is a wonderful book and is the only book that Jesus Christ himself declared to have the fullness of the Gospel D&C 20:9. In Doctrine and Covenants 84 the importance of the Book of Mormon is stressed that we should not "treat lightly the things [we] have received"

This week though Rafael was Baptized and it has been a long process of helping him get over addictions and to the point where he has felt ready to be baptized. He is from Salvador and has lived in Puerto Rico for most of his adult years. He always calls us Hermanitas "Cute little sisters" I love it so much. He is a very special spirit and he doesn't love to smile all that often but when you talk to him you can tell how much he really does love God and Jesus Christ. He is a very humble man with a large heart. I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to teach him and help him take this step. He was baptized by Hermano Toro who is a the most amazing member ever.

This last Pday we also went to a beautiful look out of the Ocean and It reminded me of all the blessings that God has given us. There is so much that he has created just so that we could have joy while here on the earth. I love you all :) have a great week :)

New Companion :0

Just Kidding I still have Hermana Paredes as my companion :)  But here is a picture of a cute little girl in our ward.

P1070809.JPG

The primary had a lesson about missionary work at church and so all the little kids had name tags that said "Future Missionary" (in english ðŸ˜‚) but they were all so excited to be missionaries and they asked to take pictures with us because they were missionaries too. This is what it must had felt like with the missionary age change in 2012. I still feel like I am this 6 yr old girl trying to figure life out. One of the primary kids told me "when I am 30 years old like you I want to be a missionary!!!!!' I wanted to tell him, "Don't look now but as soon as you are in primary you are on a mission! Life is going by way too fast."

P1070804.JPG

The work in Puerto Rico is going well we are getting rained on a lot and so my hair is always a little frizzy but I love it. It's the island life ;)  I have been learning a lot about patience and the agency of others. I think being on a mission really gave me a better eternal perspective. We are out here doing the best that we can and then there is nothing we can do when someone uses their agency in their own way. The members are doing their best to help us out but once again we are all imperfect people. which reminds me of a good talk by President Russel M. Nelson called Perfection Pending ----https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/1995/10/perfection-pending?lang=eng ---- There is nothing like a good mission to make you realized that we are all SOOOO imperfect and we have SOO much to do. But thankfully and I will be Eternally grateful that we have the Atonement of Jesus Christ to help us return to our Heavenly Father.

Everyone that we are teaching is doing well. We have a baptism scheduled for this Sunday after church for Rafael :) he is doing so well and it has been a journey to get him to accept a baptismal date and to quite smoking but he is doing well and I am really proud of him :)

We had someone read us Anti-Church literature in one of our lessons and it talked about some really weird things that "we worship 6 main Gods" an that "Mormonism believes Jesus Married 3 women" but the part that they couldn't get over was that it said Joseph Smith was 18 when he saw the vision and not 14. Somehow that was the part that really got them that we "got the age wrong when we explained the first vision" We asked them if they read the Book of Mormon and they said no because it was not inspired by God....... But they really loved this other book and they read it 6 times in the week that we last saw them!!!!!

Anyways, I know the Book of Mormon is inspired by God and is evidence that the Church of Jesus Christ was restored on the earth. I love Jesus Christ with all my heart and I am SO grateful that I have this opportunity to share what I know and to learn more than I ever though possible :) Please take the time to read from the Book of Mormon and ask God if it is true. Please don't be these people who took HOURS to read something that invited hate and conflict.

I LOVE YOU ALL!! PLEASE DO GOOD THINGS :)
